Outre-Tombe Interview (DSBM: Quebec, Canada)

Coming from Quebec, Canada, here’s the one-man/ten-bands, Dez d’Outre-Tombe. Mixing old school with the new school, here’s debuting with a single and shoots for an EP release in 2015. Enjoy!

OUTRE-TOMBE-LP-SILENCE-2JPGPlease, describe the aesthetics and the music of Outre Tombe.

The melodies are simple, yet haunting and hypnotic…
I am inspired by themes such as… Mysticism, Occultism, Metaphysics, Parapsychology, The Paranormal, The Unknown, Death, Nothingness, Tenebrosity, Nature, Technology, Horror, Pain, Despair, Anger, Consciousness, Drugs, Psychiatry…

Why the decision of making a one-man band project? Is it easier to make everything by yourself? What’s the downside of it?

I’m not a one-man-band… I’m more like a one-man/ten-bands! And yes, (too) many solo projects! I played with bands and other people too, but I like the fact that I can just compose and record whenever I get some time without the hassle of having other people to care about… I like to do everything myself…recording, cheap ass cover art, promo, whatever. The more independent I am the better… It’s not a control freak kind of thing, it is just way more convenient with my lifestyle and creative behavior…

I hear a more modern vibe in your riffs, but also a angst that reminds the old school. Is it intentional?

The old school sound probably comes from my influences… And for the modern vibe, I guess this is just the part where I let myself create music that is very personal to me. OUTRE-TOMBE is definetely the most personnal band I ever did, both musically and lyrically. But I’m not sure wich parts of my creation were intentional…The music just comes to me… But I cannot deny the fact that it sounds like black metal and must name my black metal influences : Mayhem, Emperor, Dødheimsgard, Gorgoroth, 1349, Darkthrone, Xasthur, Aborym, Anaal Nathrakh, Celestia, Mortifera, Taake, Horna, Sargeist, Belphegor, Mütiilation, Satyricon, Marduk, Carpathian Forest, Dark Funeral, Mysticum, Deathspell Omega, Bathory, Setherial, Immortal, Abyssic Hate, Tsjuder, Shining, Watain, Striborg, Frozen Shadows, Trails of Anguish, Sorcier Des Glaces, Ulver, Antaeus, Dawn, Burzum, …etc.

How is the Black Metal scene in Quebec? Which local underground bands would you recommend?

My all time favorite Black Metal bands from Quebec are TRAILS OF ANGUISH, FROZEN SHADOWS and SORCIER DES GLACES. SORCIER DES GLACES came back with a grandiose new album, but the other bands split up years ago… Check out ETHER, a solo project by ex- TRAILS OF ANGUISH drummer/singer. Could be considered “DSBM”. His other projects were also great; UNQUINTESSENCE and NEFASTUS DIES. FORTERESSE is a must if you want to hear some Métal Noir Québécois. GRIS and SOMBRES FORÊTS are also really interesting.

Your bandcamp page only features one song. Do you have anymore releases?

No. This is the first single for OUTRE-TOMBE…

What’s the plan for the future?

Working on a EP… And more projects too of course… I am currently working on a new project with my wife on vocals… It is called MÜRMUR. Very old school influenced raw Black Fucking Metal. Demo 2015 is coming soon. For now, one demo song entitled “Desastre” is available for download, on Necrophonic Recordings, as usual.
